Iran Cuts Off Ties with IAEA After UN Sanctions Vote

(MENAFN) Iran announced it will "effectively" cut off cooperation with the United Nations' nuclear oversight agency following a failed UN Security Council effort to uphold sanctions relief linked to the 2015 nuclear accord.

The declaration came Saturday via Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), after a high-level session chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian. The council blamed France, Britain, and Germany—referred to as the E3—for what it condemned as "ill-considered" actions targeting Iran’s nuclear program.

As a direct response, the SNSC said that Iran’s collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be "effectively suspended", despite what it described as Iran’s continued engagement and proposals to resolve the nuclear issue.

The council also directed the Iranian Foreign Ministry to pursue diplomatic channels aligned with national interests and the council’s directives.

This move follows Friday’s failed UN Security Council vote, which aimed to extend sanctions relief under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). That relief is now set to expire, reactivating prior UN sanctions.

Last month, the E3 invoked the JCPOA’s “snapback” mechanism—allowing for the reimposition of international sanctions within 30 days if Iran is found to be in violation. These renewed sanctions are expected to take effect later this month.

The JCPOA has faced mounting pressure since the United States’ unilateral withdrawal in 2018, which prompted Tehran to gradually roll back its compliance with the deal.
