Australia Announces Recognition of Palestinian State
“Effective today, Sunday the 21st of September 2025, the Commonwealth of Australia formally recognizes the independent and sovereign State of Palestine,” Albanese declared in a statement posted on the US social media platform X.
With this declaration, Australia “recognizes the legitimate and long held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own,” Albanese emphasized.
The move by Canberra aligns with recent recognitions by Canada and the United Kingdom, Albanese noted, describing it as part of a “co-ordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution.”
This recognition unfolds amid the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 65,200 Palestinians—predominantly women and children—since October 7, 2023.
