UN’s Guterres Calls for Renewed Global Solidarity
(MENAFN) The United Nations’ highest-ranking leader, Antonio Guterres, called for a revitalized sense of worldwide cooperation on Friday, as the organization commemorated its 80th anniversary amid international conflicts and ongoing challenges.
“It is often in the darkest hours when despair looms and division deepens — that humanity comes together to make history,” Guterres stated during a remembrance gathering held at the UN’s main offices in New York.
He emphasized that “global problems demand global solutions,” and reflected on the privilege of contributing to “one of the most ambitious and profound undertakings in human history: The decision — despite our differences — to solve problems together.”
Reinforcing his point that “anything and everything is possible when we stand united,” the Secretary-General portrayed the UN as a “living legacy,” kept alive by those who operate under its emblem.
“The United Nations is not just a set of buildings. It is not just words on paper. It is alive — in you,” Guterres remarked, applauding the efforts of peacekeepers, humanitarian personnel, diplomats, and members of civil society.
He acknowledged that they have transformed “the world not just through declarations, but through dedication.”
He highlighted the UN’s contributions over the past 80 years — from conflict prevention to educational progress, public health improvements, and life-saving aid during crises.
Guterres concluded by noting that the organization’s worth is found not only in “what has been achieved — but what still lies ahead.”
