Germany Signals Support for Independent Palestinian State

(MENAFN) Germany reiterated on Monday its unwavering commitment to supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state but clarified it would not recognize statehood at this time.

“A Palestinian state is our goal. We support the two-state solution. There is no other way. This, however, must be achieved through negotiations. No one should pursue a policy of forcing their way through a wall at this point,” Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told reporters in Berlin before departing for New York, where he will attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Wadephul stressed that the road to peace remains through dialogue: “The path of understanding, reconciliation, and negotiations remains the difficult, arduous middle path. But the Federal Republic of Germany stands for this. However remote it may be at this moment, a negotiated two-state solution is the path that can enable Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace, security, and dignity,” he stated.

Germany's position comes as the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally recognized Palestine as a state on Sunday. More countries, including France, Malta, and Luxembourg, are expected to follow suit during the UN General Assembly proceedings this week.

In parallel, international leaders are slated to participate in a conference focused on the peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the advancement of the two-state solution.

Meanwhile, Wadephul issued a stark warning to Israel regarding its territorial ambitions. He cautioned against any annexation of Palestinian territories, describing such actions as a threat to peace prospects.

"What the region needs now is an immediate ceasefire, significantly more humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, and the immediate, unconditional release of (Israeli) hostages," he emphasized. "Any steps toward an annexation of occupied territories in violation of international law also undermines the chance of a lasting solution to the conflict," Wadephul concluded.
