Zohran Mamdani to take oath at abandoned NYC subway station

(MENAFN) New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is set to officially assume office during a private swearing-in ceremony at an abandoned subway station shortly before midnight on Jan. 1.

The ceremony will take place at the Old City Hall station, one of the city’s earliest subway stops that opened in 1904 and was taken out of service in 1945.

New York Attorney General Letitia James will administer the oath of office in the presence of Mamdani’s family, formally marking the start of his mayoral term as the new year begins.

Mamdani has described the choice of venue as deeply symbolic, reflecting a vision of New York shaped by and dedicated to working people.

"When I take my oath from the station at the dawn of the New Year, I will do so humbled by the opportunity to lead millions of New Yorkers into a new era of opportunity, and honored to carry forward our city’s legacy of greatness," Mamdani said Monday in a statement.

After the closed ceremony, Mamdani will host a broader public event titled “Inauguration of a New Era,” inviting residents from across the city to participate in a second swearing-in that celebrates the start of his administration.

Later that day, US Sen. Bernie Sanders—whom Mamdani has previously cited as a major influence on his political path—will preside over the oath during the public ceremony.
